Disclaimer: I've not done this on a 9-5 or an NG 900, but I've done enough Classic 900s to know what's under all that grease. Unless, of course, they changed it all...
If you look down in there, where the axle goes into the bearing holder, you'll see a cut-down section. At the bottom of that are the two prongs for a captive circlip. This circlip needs to be opened with pliers (Sears used to sell just the right tool for the job, where you squeeze the tool together and the jaws open the clip. It also had flat faces to open this clip). Opening the clip, and getting it in the right spot, allows the axle to pull out of the bearing carrier. This can be very frustrating, but believe me, at some point, the stars (and the circlip grooves) will align, and the axle will come out with no effort.
Unless they changed something, there is nothing to destroy in there. After you get the axle out, reassembly is just plunking the nose of the axle down in the splines, and waiting for the "click".
