Around April 15 the CEL light on my 2003 Aero wagon came on. Error code P134 - misfire on cyls 3/4. I heard this indicated a misfire so, not wanting to buy a new ignition cassette I tried changing the plugs. The light went out.
On April 26, it came on again. This time P1334 was accompanied by P1312 - misfire on cyls 1 and 2, I'm told. At this point, I was preparing for a ~500 mile trip so I bought new DIC. The DIC took a few days to come and, over those few days, the light came on, then off a few times. Put the new DIC in, put the old one in the trunk, and everything was fine, until I was 350 miles into the family trip.
At that point, driving up a hill with a trailer in the middle of nowhere with an exhausted and cranky family (me included) the CEL started flashing. I asked my wife to pull the manual our of the glove box to remind me what a the flashing light meant and she said PULL OVER AND GET THE CAR TOWED. Not an option, given the circumstances, so instead I pulled over and put the old DIC back in place. The CEL remained on, but did not flash, so we continued on the trip with the little CEL glaring at me angrily for the next ~500 miles. Finally, two days and 350 miles later, the light went out again. Then on again the next day. Today, it is off.
I have a little data logger on my OBD port, so I have a history of what error codes have been coming up over this period:
when new DIC was installed:
no light for 2 days, but the log still shows approximately hourly occurrences of P1334 and P1312 - since I never reset the unit these could be old data
when flashing CEL lit up:
P1314,P1312,P1303,P0303.
The log shows hourly occurrences of these codes up to today; again, this could be old data.
So - either I have an intermittent old DIC and a bad new one, or this is being caused by problem other than the DIC and/or spark plugs. Any thoughts as to what might be causing this?
TIA,
Sam
