It is so many contributing factors to the sludge problem that no one will be able to put a one reason alone label to it.
Strangely enough though is that the alarm reports have died off quite a bit and not many 02 and up seems to be affected like the 99-01.
So with that in mind you could also blame the loose head bolts in 01 an older maybe allowing small amounts of coolant to mix with oil together with combustion blow by gases.
It was also at the same time they started to use that semi synthetic oil and went to 10K oil change recommendations so that might be a reason too.
They also came out with these low compression piston rings that barely seal against the cylinder liner so that might be a reason too, allowing blow by into the oil.
The oil pump was redesigned and some tests have shown that the oil pump was not up to snuff maybe starving the engine of oil making it run too hot and burning the oil prematurely.
