I doubt that the catalytic converter under the engine is a problem. The cat gets very hot when? When the car is going quickly down the road (high flow rate through the system), when the oil is circulating at a high rate through the engine (and cooler), and when there is a good flow of air under the engine. The sump is heavy gauge aluminum, in contact with the bulk of the oil in the pan and the water-cooled and massive block. The principle heat transfer mechanism between the exhaust and the sump is radiation, and aluminum (even dirty aluminum) is fairly reflective to infra red, as is the stainless steel. Sure, I've seen pictures of sludged oil pans, and the area above the cat is also sludged pretty well, but what of "clean" engines?
