If the rubber is drying out and cracking I would suspect their grip to be less than original. This happened to me once years ago on some long-wearing all-seasons and the tires became noticeable less grippy in wet weather. New tires aren't cheap but that should be weighed against the cost of an accident or getting stuck somewhere.
To quote the Tire Rack: "Depending on their severity, they may be cosmetic in nature if they don't extend past the rubber's outer surface, or may be a reason to replace the tire if they reach deep into the rubber."
