What you're pointing at is not a subframe but a structural reinforcements for load absorbing during frontal accident. These bars are hollow inside and their job is to crush front-back and transfer the energy under the passenger compartment.
I used to put the jack on them, until mine started bending in :( They have very little resistance and can be easily bent (see picture).
Now I only use approved jacking points - on 4 corners of the car. I try to position my jack on one edge of the jacking reinforcement, so that I can put a stand right next to it and leave the car on that.
Also, as for car "falling on me" - I'm trying to make sure it won't happen. Every time I jack the car up and leave it on stands, I shake it vigorously to see if it will fall down - without me under ;-). Some of those caliper carrier nuts take a lot of wrenching to get them of, so it's good to know that your car is stable and secure.
