Once you have sludging issues, seems like lots of things can go wrong. I bought a 9000 that had sludging issues due to lack of oil changes. The engine died because of balance chain issues long after the poor maintenence/sludge problems occurred.
I think once you identify a possible sludge issue it would be cheap to buy the "trick" oil pan. I'd be checking the heck out of that. However, I'm guessing that some may say it is already too late, and you will have probs with the engine. I'm hoping some more experienced folks speak up here. My point is that you may have a better chance of saving the engine with the "trick" oil pan and removable of the balance chain. True?
I'm killing my 9000 due to an unknown drop in oil pressure. May be due to a bad oil pressure relief valve, sludge, or bearings. I'm thinking it is the first, but who knows? $4-5k rebuild cost is killing a very nice car. I'm thinking that pan looks pretty cheap right now.
