Pulled the oil pan, it fell off after removing bolts, no sealant holding it left, evident this was one source of my oil coated oil pan.
First I filtered the drained oil, nothing showing in funnel screen but screen holes not very fine..
I was optimistic at first as the inside of oil pan didn't look terribly bad at all for 175K, slight skimming of baked on looking oil, don't think I would call it sludge?? not sure, but if so certainly not bad, underside of motor block has very light baked on oil coating maybe 5" up, can kinda scrape off with fingernail almost looks like 180 grit sandpaper surface, above that section is nice golden brown..
Pulled pickup screen cover abd all still looked good, no real chunks evident.. then pulled pickup screen and was shocked and not sure if doomed??? It looked 100% clogged, could blow air through with mouth so wasn't totally clogged, but barely any light showing through from shining light into tube end.. explains why oil light went on recently, but only recently?.. under the screen was at least tablespoon size pile of chunks about 1/2 " high, thought may be metal, started sifting through it and looks like black plastic shards, some fairly large. Perhaps balance or timing chain guides? but black? Remainder small pieces do look like coffee grounds, but not squishy, hard chunks like shreddeed black plactic and different shapes.. ran my magnet through the chunk pile and across screen, barely any shavings at all stuck to it, I mean hardly any at all.. there were maybe 3-4 obvious shiny brass shavings that I could locate in the pile, very very small and thin slivers? but brass from what?? Have many pictures, but not downloaded yet, may post some..?
Balance chain is very loose, can flop it back and forth with finger and real loose on sprocket, looks like have no choice, unless pull motor, but to try and cut and pull it out? Hope I don't end up with a vibrating machine?? Anyone done this and happy or not with results after?? It seemed to vibrate terribly at idle anyway, but had all 4 blown motor mounts? looks tight but I think can grind off chain pins with dremel and grinding wheel and pull link? then which way should it be pulled through front or back??
Is there any way to flush/clean out some oil ports/pasages from above or below with head and pan off using parts or carb cleaner for precaution draing into big pan? I plan on at least spraying from below and brushing off sandpaper gritlike residue froim block..
Don't have tools to measure plastiguage if I went that route to check bearings, given all the above would it be worth this extra step? Or would simply throwing in new standard size bearings if surface of crankshaft looks good be worth the extra $150 ish w/o plastiguage? Or is this throwing good money after bad and oping for best?
Knowing all this, ya think I am crazy puting in bunch of $$ for hap hazard attempt to repair 175K motor only doing headgasket repair, new used turbo, timing chain and sprockets, and other should do upgrades/new o-rings seals everywhere while access is easy seeing the screen was 100% plugged and the pile of plactic shards and flickering oil light in the end? Car seemed to run amazingly OK even in end when smoking up a storm..
I am enjoying the repairs and learning more than I want to about my car, but need the car back asap and hope all is not for nothing in the end..
Thanks for your expertise and insights as always..
