Sorry to disagree but each time the head was off my 9-5 for new head gaskets (twice) there WAS carbon build up. The head was cleaned each time and I was religiously using 93 / 91 octane Chevron with Techron added every 5K miles or less. My master tech even used a carbon elimination product ( don't recall which one) at major services after the first head gasket but that obviously did not eliminate the problem. My car was run relatively hard and even pulled a trailer periodically.
