With your battery charged and probably your engine running and charging too, if anybody has scrambled electronics, it is your neighbor. It would make no difference whether the cables were connected your vehicle first or last. With the system cross polarized, he shouldn't have been able to start his car so all you would have been doing is reversing the polarity of his battery and maybe screwing up his electrical system. And yes you can reverse the polarity of a lead acid battery.
