Chuck Andrews modified an anesthesia gas flow guage to serve as a PCV efficiency meter. PCV revs 1-5 do not flow at idle, PCV 6 flows nicely at idle.
The PCV system needs to separate oil from the bypass gasses and then connect to the low pressure part of the intake. That changes from behind the throttle body (low power) to the compressor inlet (high power) with engine load. Originally (the legend has it) the switching function was to be under computer control, but the lawyers discovered that such a device would need to be monitored under OBD II and there were no provisions in the OBD II regulations to allow it. That it took the engineers so long to design a passive system that functions correctly is either a sign that the task was not trivial and straighforward or the bean counters held sway up until the sludge monster destroyed Saab's reputation. Given the regularity of revision and the minimal change in the parts count between Rev 1.0 and Rev 6, I tend to believe it was the former.
