I've investigated 2 cars -
the first one was a 2002 w/ 128k miles -
the PCV hoses were nearly destroyed by oil and age and the system didn't seem to be leaking, but upon removing the head they did not go back together (the rubber was shot) so the update kit was installed and it worked perfectly w/ no leaks.
The second was a 99 w/ 90k miles - it leaked badly for 30k miles according to the owner - then recently it started loosing oil that could not be accounted for - this was explained when I checked and the trap drain line was missing! The rubber on that was shot also, and the other hoses weren't bad as they were the original PCV or #2 - replaced it w/ the #6 and now it doesn't leak one bit where before (and this is before the drain hose disappeared) it would dribble on the ground when you stopped.
So it looks to me like if some of the revisions used crappy rubber, and also the earliest revisions just didn't work, if there's any problem just put #6 on and it seems to cure everything in my limited experience so far...
