Updated Intake Tube - Go buy one! Posted by B Millar [Email] (#1109) [Profile/Gallery] (more from B Millar) on Fri, 10 Jul 2009 09:20:40 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My '04 Aero hit 40k miles yesterday. I bought it with 31k miles and never really knew if any of the 30k service was done... apparently it was NOT. I ordered an air filter from eEuro and threw some extra doo-dads in my cart for free shipping, including the newer intake pipe.
The thing is a BEAST compared to the wimpy little crazy straw that came in my car. The air filter definitely had 40k miles on it. It was GROSS. So I replaced that and the intake tube (which was not as easy as I thought it might be). I jacked the car behind the front passenger wheel, and removed the front skirt from under the bumper. I had to unbolt the two horn brackets behind the grille and what appeared to be an A/C pipe for some extra wiggle room down underneath. I got everything in and back together and went for a test drive last night around the neighborhood and wasn't all that impressed but there was a little extra oomph.
Well today... it is extra nice weather in CT so I went joyriding around town and got a better feel for what the intake did for the car. It was GREAT! Turbo lag is **noticeably** reduced, 3rd and 4th make my head move to the headrest more now (I'll have to try 5th on the highway). Not neck-snapping but there's definitely a little extra something there. Going up a steep hill at around 40mph it was able to hold 4th gear. Usually it bogs down, lugs, and downshifts to 3rd for me. For $23, a half hour of your time, and some curse words how can you not put one of these in your car?
I will say... I had the whole Genuine Saab open intake on my 2001 V6 and it barely made a difference. Just a lot of noise. So I can't imagine this would make any noticeable difference on the V6 or LPT. I think the turbo just doesn't move enough air on those cars. If you've got a 2004 Arc with the Full Pressure Turbo, or any Aero with a High Output Turbo, I bet you'll notice it more.
