I'll certainly post my results when I do it, but it will probably not be for 3 weeks; the next two weekends are too full of summer fun to get under the car. But to a couple of your points:
You could put a rubber spacers in there, but those spacers don't just raise the car, they also increase the spring rate, giving a stiffer ride. I like the standard Aero rate a lot. I do use a pair of rubber spacers in the back when I'm pulling a trailer any distance; they help a lot. They aren't that hard to install/remove if you have a floor jack either.
You could shove a spacer in the top if you compressed the spring, in fact I plan on making them split so I can do exactly that. But you cant get to the top w/o removing the strut, as far as I can tell. That said, you don't need to realign the front end if you remove/reinstall the strut, only if you replace them. The strut bolts are a very snug fit and reference everything well. I had to take everything apart to measure for the spacers last weekend so I became very familiar with the project.
One thing that surprised me was that I managed to stretch one of the strut bolts when tightening with a hand wrench! I ordered 4 new bolts and will carefully torque them next time; I should have been more careful, I guess.
