If you are basing your decision on the possibility of moving to a snowy area and they might be your only set of tires, I wouldn't go with a high- or ultra high-performance tire. My 9-5 came with Nexen N7000's. They are classified as ultra-high performance tires. I like them enough (wouldn't buy them again myself) but they are utterly useless in any type of winter on the road. I literally got stuck on a moderate incline with 1/4" of snow on the ground. I never planned on getting snow tires and always survived CT winter with a decent set of all-seasons, but I didn't want to ditch the brand new Nexen's my car came with. So, I just bought snow tires. As an aside, I will never go through a winter without dedicated snows from now on; the car is a monster in the snow with proper shoes on it.
I was going to recommend Goodyear Assurance Tripltreds but I don't see them in the 17" Aero size and they might be out of the price range. In casual conversation my Saab indy swore by them and my mom has them on her car and they do well in snow. Not on sheer ice though...
