Years back, "All Season" really meant "no season" when talking about tires. They were uniquely un-qualified to go pretty much anyplace.
These days, you can get some very nice "high performance all season" tires (Tire Rack's nomenclature) that will do very nicely in urban and most suburban areas where it doesn't snow much to start with, snow removal is quick, and you almost never need to drive any distance on ice.
I've used the Bridegstone Potenza G009s, and their replacements, the Potenza G019 Grid. The 009s (size 195/60-15)saw service on my Classic 900, and now on my Volvo, and the 019s (215/55-16) on my dearly departed 2002 9-5 Arc. They both are very good for my style of driving (i.e. I'm not qualifying at Indy all the time...), not too expensive, and perform quite adequately in the winters in suburban New Jersey.
For me, unless I have a car that will only see summer service (like a Convertible, for instance), I no longer feel the need for two complete sets of tires.
Of course, if one lives in a place where the winter weather is more extreme, and longer lasting, then it makes sense to have dedicate winter tires.
But the all season tires of the 21st century are a totally different animal from those of the last century. Don't be afraid of them.
