and the reason today's cars (9-3SS, probably NG 9-5) have their fuel filters cast as part of the fuel pump and inside the tank. The traditional screw-together banjo bolt fittings take far too long for today's "efficient manufacturing" as compared to just pushing the line together, but they make a far better seal. Evaporative emission regulations are so strict, however, that the push-together filter fitting leaks enough vapor to consume half the allowable limit, or more.

Anyway, I've replaced this style filter on a couple or three other cars, never with the "special tool". One more reason to dig my nails into my '02 and not let go.
