Over only three model revisions.
The 64 mustang was a wild hit in no spall part to being a great balance between weight ( inversely related to performance) and an extra 3 inches here and an extra 6 inches there.
The 64 mustang goes for $100,000 at auctions like the Barret. On the other hand, marketers almost killed the model by 1975 by listening to bulk up dimension requests. The swelve mustang became a town car under another name ( figuratively not literally).
Think of the porsche 911. The max weight and wheelbase has been etched in stone over 40 years ago & still remains an icon. It would have been easy to weight it up & add two extra doors, chrome trim etc & completely distroy the reason for existance.
Seriously if you want a 3 row SUV/ minivan buy one, but leave the well appointed sportswagon alone. Most of the 9-5 best points are that it drives like a sports car and has APROACHING the cargo space of a SUV.
If you need the extra cargo space once in a while, rent a U-haul, otherwise you are carrying performance hampering bulk/junk around for no particular reason.
