Marcin is correct in that too much refrigerant can cause the problem. Unfortunately, so can too little refrigerant. You really need a gauge on the system to see what the problem is. I would guess that if it worked for a while, then stopped working, there could still be a slow leak somewhere.
Does the condenser cooling fan run? No fan will cause the system pressure to spike and turn off the compressor.
