Shark Fin - I just want it GONE

I've searched through many threads about replacing shark fins with working parts - I just would like to replace it with a piece of plastic that goes over it, one that looks like a cheap BMW piece of plastic.
It's cheap and it works (no pun intended). And I'd be willing to fill the inside with caulking or something of the sort to keep it rainproof.
So, can I just wedge my old shark fin off? If I'm never going to use it, assuming it is just the OnStar receiver, will I do any damage pulling it out? I'm afraid that there might be a nut on the end of the screw on the inside of the car, holding the fin in place. Thanks!
