If the filter isn't cleaned and oiled properly it can affect the performance of the MAF. Too little oil lets dirt particles through which is never good. If you put too much oil on the filter it will be inducted and coat the MAF leading to incorrect air mass data being sent to the computer. I suspect that even a properly oiled filter could pose a threat to the MAF over enough time. Sure, tons of people swear by K&N and say we are crazy, but it's not a risk I am willing to take on my car.
