I currently own a 2008 9-3 Aero sedan and a 2003 9-5 Aero Wagon, and have also owned a 2003 9-5 Aero sedan. At the Aero Academy last year I drove the 9-3 Aero Sedan and Wagon in defensive and performance driving scenarios. Both handled virtually the same at that school.
The 9-3 drives and handles great, but the design and materials used in the interior are just awful. Some of the worst I've experienced in my life and I've had over 25 cars (12 of which were Saabs).
Talk to many dealers off the record and they will agree. Everyone knows the 9-3's interior really fell short of "acceptable" and is nowhere near "excellent." Aside from one issue, it doesn't hold a candle to the 9-5's interior. That issue is storage space. The 9-3 is better in that category.
While the design of the 9-5 might seem old, it still is a great car and is a blast to drive.
My $.02 worth....
