I don't know what the diameter of your 16in 205/55R-16 is, but the standard 225/45R17 diameter is 25in, so I'm trying to stay close to that.
The snow tires for 16in rims I'm looking at have diameters as follows:
Michelen Ice 215/55R16 25.3in diameter (6in to 7.5in rims) load index=97
Blizzak 215/55R16 25.3in diameter (6in to 7.5in rims) load index=93
As you can see, they are slightly more than 1/4in bigger in diameter, I'm thinking I want to stay under 1/2in larger in diameter so I don't have any rubbing.
Also, these tires have load indexs close to or higher than the OE tires, which was 94.
I expect a 205/55 might be closer to a 91 load index which might not be adequate, I'm not sure.
