The seal in the turbo (in most cases) does not just go from being absolutely fine one day to gushing oil (creating smoke) the next. I had puffs of smoke from the tailpipe upon startup for about 6 months and 5k miles before mine started blowing smoke (TONS OF SMOKE) after hard acceleration. I scared a lot of passengers "hey look behind us!!" when mine was failing. You would have thought we were about to land on the Hudson river by their faces.
It's most likely the turbo failing in my opinion. BUT it could be that your PCV system is not up to snuff. Do you know if you have the PCV 6 update? If not, do a search, there's a lot of information out there. If the PCV system is plugged up or the valve isn't working, boost will get into the crankcase and push oil out all over the place, usually starting in the turbo.
