I know you didn't ask what happened, but I thought I'd put it on here so you know.
They changed how the ratings and audience size are estimated in Detroit. They went from a diary based system to an automated beeper-looking thing that folks wear.
There are tons of faults to both systems - but the big fault of the diary system is some formats are "vote" formats rather than "diary" formats. If a fan of jazz were selected to do the diary - they would tend to think to themselves "I love jazz, this is the only jazz station out there, if I don't "vote" for it in my diary...it might be gone...". And they do vote for it - they are jazz listeners all day every day no exceptions - at least that's what they write in the diary. Urban and hispanic stations are similar - as is classical. The end result is a gross overestimation of the population listening to the station.
When people meters come to town (a new technology being phased in across the country) - there is no more voting. The little beeper thing picks up a signal whenever it is in range of a radio being played, and registers the station, the daypart and the amount of time spent listening. The results are uploaded to a statistical company that correlates the results. And the results tend to be - jazz stations disappear for lack of many listeners, classical music stations gone, NPR formats go through the roof, republican talk radio goes through the roof (those who love conservative talk radio listen for an hour - those who hate conservative talk...they listen for two hours to see what the other side is thinking...and they would have never voted for that station in the old diary format).
Anywho - that's the deal. Just thought it might be interesting to someone out there. Personal People Meters. Coming soon to a radio market near you.
