this noise does not go away, in fact gets worse as you go faster. I was going to try rotation to see if anything changes, although the front and rear tires look almost identical.
I might also jack up both fronts and run the car (with TCS OFF!) to see what I hear.
Could it be the intermediate drive shaft bearing? That would explain insensitivity to lateral load, but I would expect it to vary with drive torque.
