This is the "luxury" version of el cheapo hinges. See BMW 3 series, VW Passat. I believe my uncle's E430 Mercedes had the same thing. They just build little enclosures so you can't smush things with those awful hinges. Still takes up the space and obstructs the trunk opening though. Lipstick on a pig, pretty weak.
It's the little things like this that make a car IMO. My 9-5's trunk isn't the biggest trunk in the world, but it's so use-able. The hinges are part of that.
FYI, had a rental stripper Nissan Sentra - it's got nice hinges a la the current 9-5. Go figure.
