When I was contacted by the dealer it was Monday 810am and I was in heavy traffic on the way to work. I asked for clarification on the part Name. I specifically asked and was told the Ignition Control Module is NOT the DIC or the Ignition Cassette or the Ignition Switch. I said okay do the work.
~the invoice I have now, does state Ignition Cassette~
Bottom Line: I approved work for something I was unclear about. Regardless of what knowledge the Dealer has or doesn't have, I said okay. I should have told them to hold off till if find out what they were talking about.
below is today's wrap up:
Called the dealership again, first thing this morning.
I was pleasant( to start ). I restated my question regarding the so called "Ignition Control Module" and pressed them harder. After a few holds and some yelling to the mechanic(which i could hear, they forgot to push hold..again). I asked if it had been installed and I was told "No".
My comment was "good. don't do it".
That's when the story changed, suddenly "oh wait..yes, it was installed".
I made a few choice grumbles, comments and stated I want my part back."oh we don't have that any more" was the reply. That's when I started hammering them and wanting the serial number, the fault codes and what it takes to install the part (all of 10min). I asked why would you dispose of my $400 part. No real solid answer was given. This is the 3rd IDM for my car, I blurted!!!I argued the fact that I was not given proper information for work to be done on my car. I was deceived by an unknowable Service Tech. A lot was said but I made no gains.
I said I will be over after work and how late will someone be there.
7pm was the answer.
When I went to the shop(545pm), the place was a ghost town,I walked around and asked if there was anyone to talked to from the service area, and there was not. My car keys were at the receptions desk in the show room, not at the service station.(very odd to me). No one but the girl at the phone.
I reviewed my bill and the service write up. Looked at the charges.
They did some of the other work I requested but apparently forgot to read the write up and skipped a few items. Just as well !
Seems they missed the mandatory $90.00 diagnostic fee.(score a small one for me)
IDM: part # 55559955 $ 272.00 (bill says Ignition Discharge Module and next to part number it says Ignition Cassette).
labor: $ 135.00
Oil cooler return lines (2)
part # 12778197 $51.00
part # 12778196 $74.00
O-rings(4 of them) $23.60
Labor $135.00
over night shipping of return lines $15.00
There was other stuff but those are the important ones to me. Bill total $968.00.
I find it hard to believe that they would charge me the same labor to
to replace the IDM as 2 cooler lines !! The IDM is a 10min job. I have removed it several times.
I pondered the prices. Ive been to EEuroparts and understand the cost of things. The price for parts wasn't bad. I disagree with the IDM labor, the IDM all together.
So...do i bite the bullet and get out while I can? or do I go without a car for several days and try fight them.
My experience with other SAAB dealers is.. I will Loose, cause I have. Never won a battle with GM related service.I have had trouble with every SAAB franchise, and I have dealt with several.
- I cut my loses and took my car.-
why????
1) I approved the work for something I was unfamiliar with.(My biggest error) IF I had been given the proper information I would have denied the work. I should not have given the approval while driving to work.I should have waited till I could get clarification on the failed part.
2) I will not win and even if I do, it will be a long haul to get there,
and they will not release my car.
3) Without my original part I have nothing. I will not be getting it back.
4) Probably only be able to get the labor charge dropped by 1/2.
For $65.70 its not worth the aggravation.
5) While I may not like it, the part prices not outrageous.
6) If I had denied the work, and bought an IDM from Eeuroparts, the savings would be minor.(seeing as they forgot the $90.00 diagnostic charge.)
6) I leave on Friday for a vacation in Maine (driving).
I love my car but service has always been a nightmare. I have never found a good INDY SAAB mechanic or had one recommended by other SAAB owners.
Believe me, I have searched. That's how I found Saabnet and all of you folks. It is also why I have learned to be a driveway mechanic.
Seem other owners are not surprised when I roll down my window and ask where they go for service.
The best I have been able to do is Mediocre with frustration. My car only goes in for service when disaster strikes, like this time when it died going through an intersection.
So.. that all being said: I have my car, I'm going on vacation to Eat seafood, drink some Ship Yard Ale and look for a moose.
If you're in Maine and you see a Silver Aero from NY roll by.. wave.. it might be me!!
