I believe the Aero will be easier to maintain than the Audi's. I love Audis and if you need allwheel drive I would go for the A4 with a manual transmission. The ZF's in the Audis seem to have issues and I don't trust them. If you need AWD and an automatic, go with a Subaru.
"I have found a 99 Audi A8 for $2k that has a easily fixed electrical tranny issue since I have the diagnostic computer" I have never heard of an Audi having a easily fixed tranny issue. There really isn't any fixing with the diagnostic computer, I have both Vag-Com and Prodiag (and the Bentley) and they are wonderful tools and makes working on an Audi inexpensive, but you can't fix anything with them, only monitor values, run ouput tests and change transmission modes. The A8's suffer from transmission failures, lucky ones are reparied with valve bodies. Once revers starts to go, new transmission is required. My allroad got a new transmission at 47,000 miles.
