Jon,
It sounds to me that you are weighing your Audi gut preference versus several other objective and subjective things. That's fine! One of my best friends is a real Audi/VW fan, but he admits to spending a lot more time on car maintenance than most Honda or Toyota products.
I am a SAAB owner again after about eight years without one mostly because of perceived safety (I think the stats back it up) for my daughters, vehicle feel, and initial 'used' cost. Our other two cars are a 2004 Odyssey (my wife's) and a manual trans 2004 TSX (mine). The van has 180K and the TSX has 204K. I expect I will spend more time on maintaining the 1999 9-5 (138K). They all get Nokian dedicated snow tires for winter driving - no studs in Minnesota.
You won't really make a 'wrong' decision with this. But I have a sense that teaching your wife to drive the stick is not really a solution (wasn't for me). Have you shared comments from this thread with her, and what does she think of the ideas so far? A third winter car might just be the easiest unless parking is a big problem.
Good luck with your decision-making !
Mark
