My concern is that the market for autobiles -- up-, down-, and mid- -- has waaaaay too many manufacturers, brands and models. Here in the US, CFC kinda ignored that inconvenient fact by paying people to buy cars, thereby postponing the inevitable. But the wall is out there and heading this way. Might be a different tale in China and India, but here in the U.S. -- and Canada, I'm thinking -- there's an overcapacity problem.
Besides, the traditional Saab wasn't upscale. Look at the climates in the U.S. and Canada that are home to the kind of sensible, practical, sturdy folk who buy Saabs.
While on vaca in Maine this month we stopped at a Saab dealer with whom we did business in the past. He had plenty of vacant space in his lots and only two cars in the showroom. Said banks won't lend money to build inventory, because no one knows what's going to happen to the company. But he didn't expect to know what would become of Saab for two more months.
He was ready to sell a very nice '09 steel gray 9-5 griffin for $10K off the sticker. If only I had a better crystal ball . . .
My fingers are crossed.
