I see 2 challenges for Saab: Reliability and dealer network.
There are a few things on Saabs that regularly break--Sid, coolant bypass, headlight relay, etc.--that if they fixed the problem they would have a very good car, able to compete with the Japanese. And these things aren't that hard to fix. But instead, they ignore these things and just sell more parts. Because of this, I probably won't replace my Saab with another.
Dealer network in the west stinks, once you leave the major metro areas. Of course this is a function of being a small operator in a low population density region. While with GM, they might have teamed up with other GM dealers, say Pontiac, and arranged to have located at those dealerships the most common parts and a mechanic trained to do the most common jobs when they came up. The costs of this arrangement could have been borne by Saab, but Saab owners would have had a resource available for the 800 mile trip from Portland to Salt Lake. Of course, if they had dealt with the first problem, reliability, this would be less of an issue.
