The saab side airbag is a full dual-stage airbag which goes up and forward, and covers the entire side INCLUDING the head area. It's 2-3x as large as the small little side airbag of Volvo (or Audi), as those cars also use a separate window curtain airbag from the top to protect the head area. Both protect the head equally.
In fact, NCAP crash tests shows perfect side impact protection (including the head) for the 9-5.
Older doesn't mean less safe. The old 9000 may still have been the safest car ever in terms of real-world crash death rates.
