The cam position sensor function is required for knock control and timing of the fuel injectors. It kind of fine tunes the fuel injection. There is no cam position sensor per se in a 9-5, but it is taken care of by the direct ignition cassette, which is quite a smart coil. I've never seen a car quit with that code, but it does degrade performance and gas mileage somewhat.
