The crankshaft position sensor is a coil that indicates to the computer what it needs to know about the rotation of the crank.
It does not go out of adjustment, but is a part that has a high failure rae on the 9-5. When it gets worse and can lead to no engine start, very rough idle etc.
Good news is it is easy to replace, sits on the front left side of the engine. Call it a tune up part. Get a new one and replace it and be happy.
