Hello 9-5 board, my 2000 SE has a bad problem... Posted by AMG [Email] (#3110) [Profile/Gallery] (more from AMG) on Thu, 19 Nov 2009 08:44:04 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hello all, I've mostly been on the 9K board (93 Aero) but now I have a problem with my 2000 9-5 SE with 100K miles.
Yesterday it has begun to make a loud racket from within the timing cover. As soon as I realized this was occurring I shut off the car. This morning I started it briefly to make sure the noise wasn't from the S-belt pulleys/tensioner, they appear fine. I ran the car for about 15 seconds, it started normally and doesn't seem to be skipping or missing, it's like a repetitive thunking noise from a rotating part within the timing cover.
I'm about to order the parts to replace the timing components and water pump myself. I believe I can do this myself based on the write-ups I've seen, saving myself ~$1000 in the process.
My important question is: given the car starts and the engine seems to not be missing, is it likely the damage is NOT internal to the engine or valves? Could the noise I'm hearing be a seized or failing pulley or tensioner and the engine can still be saved?
Any thoughts at all are appreciated. Here's a pic of the unhappy patient:
