Assuming the old tires were worn out, the new tires would be slightly larger diameter. I have two sets, slightly different sizes, I used to get consistent mileage between summer and winter until I replaced them a year ago. I was very surprised to see a significant rise in mileage with the new winter tires, and a drop with the new summer tires. I would have predicted the opposite. So yes, there is variation in mileage, probably due to a number of factors.
Old summer: OEM Michelin Primacy 225/45/17, MPG's consistent with winter
Old winter: Gislaved Nordfrost 205/55/16, MPG's consistent with summer
New summer: Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus 225/45/17, MPG's decreased
New winter: Michelin Primacy Alpin PA3 205/55/16, MPG's increased
