And by that I mean...what's the speed rating of the old Eagles versus the new Turanzas.
There's a lot of science that goes into this problem, and it's not something I entirely understand. Typically, however, I think one can expect a 2-3mpg drop when new tires are put into a car--new tires are heavier, have a higher rolling resistance and have more tire tread to deform on the flat patch. (This is where my science is iffy, but I am under the impression the tire weight reduces the fuel mileage due to both increasing the weight of the vehicle but also the weight of the wheel that the axle has to spin around.)
I ask about the speed rating because that does, in some way, determine rolling resistance (well, kind of.) For instance, I had my very old, nearly bald Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S replaced with lovely new Pilot Sport A/S pluses.
My gas mileage didn't change at all. I figure this is because the Pilot Sport A/S plus has such an absurdly hard tread that there is little deformation of the tire tread on the flat patch. So while weight may be higher, and rolling resistance may be higher, the lack of deformation is what gives me similar mileage.
