For the past six months, i've been searching for a 9-5 Aero Sportcombi w/ a stick to replace the '99 9-3 SE I had to sell last year. However, when an '07 auto Aero popped up a few weeks back within 350 miles of my home in Oklahoma, I decided to jump on it. Last Friday I negotiated with the dealer selling it and wound up with a great price, and told him i'd pick it up today. Despite the bad news yesterday, I figured this would either be the perfect time or the last chance to pick up the Saab o' my dreams. Therefore, I packed my backpack this morning, grabbed a flight on Southwest, and went to West Texas to pick it up and drive home.
My first impressions are:
1.) the '06 9-5 facelift isn't a bad thing: the interior is definitely user friendly and functional, and the audio headunit is superb. I do miss the WX band and mute buttom on the '99 9-3 I had previously, but other than that, no complaints. In addition, they retained a good amount of the functionality (and even the font!) from the previous SID in the new instrument panel SID. It might be in a different location, but it works.
2.) the seats are the end-all / be-all of sitting: after 5 hours of driving, I wasn't sore a bit - plus, the ventilation feature is amazing.
3.) excellent cruiser: i've never driven a better car for 350 miles straight, period. The steering was a bit heavy and precise, the suspension felt glued to the road, the car stayed pointed in the direction I wanted to go, period.
So, even though there was some bad news yesterday and the future of the brand is up in the air, i've now got a new bit of Saab in my driveway now. Plus, when I decided to stop and grab some snacks on the way home, I walked out of the store and immediately smiled when I saw my new car - just like I used to when I had my '99 9-3. If only more people would just give them a test drive, i'm sure they'd be doing just fine right now.
