Thanks for the tips on removal of the tail light assy. I did get into that years ago but could not recall what the non destructive method was.
I went to replace the amber lamp years ago and as I worked with it, it was working again and I put the old lamp back.
This time it did not self resurrect. The filament looked perfect. I crushed and remove the metal base and tested the bare leads to the lamp and it tested good. The wire that goes to the metal base was not welded to the base like we used to see with brass lamp bases. The wire was simply "jammed" between the glass envelope and the base making a simple contact and this contact was the problem. It looked oxidized at the contact point.
This seems to be a designed in vulnerability.
