We'll probably never get the real story. I was upset when I learned SAAB was going to GM years back - I'm sure many of us knew in our gut that was the beginning of the end. After watching the recent documentary about what GM did to their own EV1 electric vehicle I have no respect for GM management whatsoever.
SAAB had (has?) a very loyal cultish following, almost like Harley Davidson did. Harley almost went under and a visionary leader brought them back. SAAB could have been managed as a very successful niche if the focus was on quality, and they maintained the spirit of the design and engineering of the thing. I think back to some of the SAAB concept cars I had seen years ago - gorgeous! What happened to all those dreams?...I agree with one of the other writers, what do you buy now? An overpriced BMW or Volvo? Or an unreliable Audi - the TT is the only thing they have with any style, where are you going to put a kid in that thing?
I have a 9-5 now b/c I couldn't keep up with the maintenance on my 9000 Aero and ran it to almost 175,000 miles but that surely was my favorite car. That car felt like a fortress, and with that awesome hatch back, the leather interior, turbo...ahhh.
I wish I could've withheld my personal portion of the GM tax bailout.
