Happy New Year to all fellow Saab owners!
Unfortuanately for me, not so happy this morning. The second time I used my 1999 V6 9-5 this year, the turbo seems to have suffered a catastrophic oil seal failure.
The car started fine this morning and I drove off to work with no problems. About 5 blocks later, the car started to hesitate under even gentle throttle. I could now clearly see a lot of blue-tinted smoke from the exahust and detected a burning smell. I stopped and the engine stalled immmediately. It restarted and I limped it back home a parked the car.
I had not noticed any puffs of smoke on start-up recently BUT considering how cold it has been here on the Canadian praire, the normal exhaust vapour would mask a bit of that if it was happening.
Looks like I'll have to find a rebuilt exchange or send mine in for repair. I did a quick BB search and see several references to turbo replacements, but most refer to the 4 cyl Saabs. I did see some folks found V6 turbos on eBay... so I am off to look.
I'll dig in more after work today. I can't imagine what else could be wrong so suddenly. A quick removal of the turbo pipe to the intake should confirm the problem if I find a bunch of oil in there.
