The sensor is part of the lock assembly. I'd think that after this many years, the seals would be worn enough that it would reliably shut to "completely locked" (enough to satisfy the pictogram) rather than "mostly locked" (won't open without a key or remote, but still looks to the pictogram like an open hatch). Or maybe the sensor is broken.
