It probably doesn't do much harm to the transmission, but it sure isn't doing your brakes any good. Keep the car in gear and let the engine help you stop instead of transfering all of the job to the brakes.
For lots of reasons, including most especially safety, IMHO you should *ALWAYS* have a moving vehicle in gear. Whether you drive an autobox or a manual, coasting is a bad idea.
