Your gauge is reading high
meaning a thermostat that fails open should mean your coolant is travelling through the rad and being cooled by convection (even when it doesn't want to). This would drop the gauge.
Debris in rad can be likely source
*p.s - however, if you live in some place that in January you have hot, hot weather, the opposite can happen, and the car can overheat. not likely though
