Even though it sounds very, very strange if you trust him it is not much to say.
I guess it is an extremely slight chance that the groove that holds the C-clip which holds the oil pump cover in place can crack and since that groove is part of the whole timing cover, it is quite a challenge to replace it.
Also, if you would go ahead with such an operation it is a slew of other things to think about like timing and balance chain gears and chains and oil pump pickup screen and cylinder head gasket replacement.
That would certainly bring the price a lot higher than $1800.00 but well worth to think about.
