New tranny mounts eliminate slopiness Posted by Brianatl [Email] (#1832) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Brianatl) on Sat, 6 Mar 2010 14:19:19 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
One of my '02 lpts with 78k miles has had jerky play in it for some time when put into R or D and also when changing gears in D. Since I do my oil changes (every 3,500 mi w/synthetic)I have also noticed that the square bushing in the tranny torque mount has some cracking, lacks a tight fit and was rotated out of correct position. So I replaced the entire torque mount assembly given its cost was slightly more (after shipping) than just the aftermarket bushing one vendor offers that some board folk think is a bit too rigid.
I agree with others that the original bushing design is inadequate. It seems to me too much of the rubber is cut out of it to do its job for long. I beefed it up by inserting snug wood blocks in the rectangular voids at each end of the bushing. I hope this will keep the bushing snug for much longer. I then replaced the upper tranny mount having read that these tend to deterioate as well. The original one had elongated at least 1/4" so I had to jack the tranny up about 1/2" to get the center bolt to show enough to get its nut back on.
Job took 3 hours total as I am not very fast with auto work but do quite a bit out of both interest and necessity.
Bottom line: the tranny sloppiness is gone and has a real solid feel now. Interestingly, my other lpt has 87k miles and has always had a smoother tranny operation. Both cars recently had their second long serp belts put on.
I ordered at the same time a new yoke engine mount since I read that some suggest this needs to be replaced around 80k. I'll do that next but don't expect that to give much better feel or less vibration. All three mounts cost $300 delivered from Europarts.
