Bad fuel check valve - solution for starting up

This one is for the archives.
Probably obvious but surprisingly effective.
I think I have a bad fuel check valve at the fuel pump. I got the parts and assembled all the necessary tools but didn't dig into it because of the weather this weekend. I did however find a 100% effective solution to getting around on a bad valve.
I park my car with its rear right wheel on the curb and gravity does the rest. On Friday night, before stumbling across this, it took me 11 minutes of priming, begging, pleading and cranking to get it started.
Right rear wheel on the curb? Second crank, three seconds. Catch, run, smooooth...
so fyi, if you have a bad fuel check valve and need to get around, just park the car on an incline so that at least some fuel remains in the back and you're back in business.
On that same topic: How much play is there in the feed hose? I had my pump changed once before so I assume an inch has already been cut and repressed into the white elbow on the newer pump (used)... is there enough hose left for me to cut another inch and refit?
I bought some 1/4" fuel line hose and clamps just in case...
