RUST on '04 on MIROR HOUSING - That's not plastic!

Hi,
I am angry. What I assumed was black plastic between the mirors and the car is, in fact, a metal of some sort, one that is very ill-protected at that. Corrosion caused bumps, and in a recent car wash run, a whole lot of black paint came off, revealing light gray, corroded metal underneath. What's WORSE, runoff from rain is damaging the paint on the car, with streaks going down the door that I can't get rid of.
My indy said these parts are very expensive (he couldn't remember exactly how much and was a little confused in his parts list).
My '00 9-5 must have been plastic, as it should be. I need a solution ASAP before I need a new paint job on the car (which I can live with as is, but if I were pickier, I'd be looking for a repaint - the car is otherwise 100% impeccable!). I can't imagine spending several hundred $ for new crappy metal pieces that will rust again in a few years. Any ideas on what to do? I guess many others out there have had this issue...
Thanks folks!
Rick
