For a long time I used Royal Purple which seemed to turn black after 500 mi. M-1 seems to turn black fairly quickly too in my 9000s and my two 9-5s. Don't know the 9-5s well enough, but you could tell when the oil in the 9000s were getting old. The 99 and C900 used Castrol dino and I don't really recall what the oil looked like.
I think Saab engines, turbo, or maybe just the oil I've been using tends to blacken. I think it is normal.
